Robert E. Hatcher was a Yeoman First Class assigned to the USS Raleigh at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. The USS Raleigh (CL-7) was an Omaha-class light cruiser. Moored on the east side of the north channel at Pearl Harbor, the USS Raleigh was hit by a torpedo during the first wave of the attack. Although listing heavily, the crew was able to save the ship.
